Is it illegal to give a lift to unknown people in India?
Yes, It is illegal to give a lift to unknown people in India. According to law one need to get a commercial license for their vehicle (yellow plate) to carry unknown people. There are specific rules and regulations one need to follow for such a license. Since private vehicles don’t have such a license, it is against law to carry unknown people.
Why is the yellow plate necessary to carry unknown people?
The yellow plate registration is necessary to carry unknown people because a commercial vehicle has to pay way more registration tax than a private vehicle. As a commercial vehicle uses the roads and facilities more than a private vehicle, it makes sense to tax them more.
So, after paying a huge tax, they get the benefit of giving lift to unknown people and earn money from it. So, if a private vehicle wants to do that, it will have to get the yellow plate registration first.
Moreover, I personally don’t give lift to anyone because of safety reasons. Once the stranger is inside the car, he can do various things which can harm you and your property.
Another reason that I do not give lifts to unknown people because there are of lot of transport options availible nowadays. Everyone owns a mobile phone where booking a ride to anywhere in the country is just a few clicks away.
It doesn’t make sense anymore to give lifts to unknown people unless it is an emergency. Also, It is illegal to give lift to strangers in India.
