What should we do if we found a lost phone/ wallet or anything on the road? are there any legal obligations?
Should we keep it? Or should we sell it?
If you found a lost phone/wallet or anything on the road then first of all we should go and submit it to the nearest Police Station. If the owner complaints about that lost item then-Police may find him and return his belongings.
On the other hand, if you keep the lost item or if you try to sell it. Then if a complaint is filed against that lost item then the police will somehow find it and trace you and you will get the punishment as per Section 379 IPC:
Section 379 in The Indian Penal Code
379. Punishment for theft.—Whoever commits theft shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.
