Difference between producing and handing-over documents:There are multiple scenarios where it vital to show our documents. But there are some situations in which it is not imperative to hand over all your documents.

For example, If you are stopped by traffic police on any ground, under Section 150 of the Motor Vehicles Act, you are obliged to hand over just your license. Other documents like Registration and Insurance are only required to be produced, not handed over.

The question is, What is the difference between producing and handing over the documents?

There are many different meanings of the phrase “producing documents”. It is usually used in a court of law when either the plaintiff or defendant is asked to produce any document as evidence.

Producing means to keep the document handy. You will be required to surrender them only on request. While handing-over a document means to give the document without any request made under the procedure established by law.

Next time when you are stopped by the Traffic Police, do know that you are obliged to hand over your license to them and other documents are just to be produced.
